Postcard from CERN
I just got this email from Andy, my former graduate student. The bastard is so lucky!
The last of the 8 muon toroids was put in place a couple months ago, and now the ATLAS calorimeter has been moved into the center of thedetector.
See those 16 "fingers" on the end of the barrel? Those are the crates where the front-end electronics for the LAr calorimeter go. There's another 16 on the other end too. We still have 26 of those crates which need to have boards installed and commissioned. That means plugging them in (30 boards per crate), cabling them up, hooking up water-cooling, power supplies, etc. All while lying upside down on top of a 4T superconducting magnet at the center of an LHC interaction point. :) Cheers, Andy.
Actually sitting in there, on his back, in the middle fo the ATLAS detector. I'm so envious!!
T. Dorigo should see this before the next lecture video... (arp-546)

Just a small plug for UW and the work we had done. If you look at the bottom of the picture before the platform, you see a white object nestled between the magnets. That is an End Cap Monitored Drift Tube or Muon chamber. That chamber was assembled in Seattle. Its hard to tell right now because it is covered up for protection.

its quite amazing really. Just a few months ago I was staring at the last of the muon chambers going to be sent over to CERN. You should really go down and see it for yourself - its mind blowing to see it. No matter how many figures you look at it is never as impressive as being right next to it

It always amazes me that billions can be spent doing this, when one tenth of that money would poverty in every inner city in North America.
I have noticed that at least 80 microbiologists and related scientists have died under mysterious circumstances in the last 5 years.
Obviously, the West is planning to kill off large chunks of the world population, and doesn't want any interference, probably targeting Arabs, Chinese and Blacks.
Don't any of you scientists care about this? Or is it just accepted that this is the best solution to 'overpopulation' and allocation of resources?
