A conference poster
On Saturday I am off to the meeting in Hawaii. I am very excited about this.
The only annoying thing is, that my talk was not selected for presentation. Who knows why? Of course the conference is heavily over-subscribed and the usual folks have to talk even if we have heard their talks a million times. But there are also some postdocs and PhD students talking, so it is not that bad. You realize by now that I have a grudge. I like giving talks. Of course, on the one side I understand the organizers that they have to select some people. But what did they do: 60 people in a poster session. In my opinion poster sessions are ENTIRELY USELESS because hardly anybody goes there. I never participated in a poster session. The usual way to go is to organize parallel sessions in this case so that everybody who wants to talk can talk. I mean it is a workshop ! There you don't need people giving the same review talk for the zillionst time. To quote Homer: "BORING".
Anyway the organizer where so considerate to organize a "rapid fire session", where everybody can present the poster for 60 seconds. A good idea I think, if you have to have a poster session. But they made their priorities pretty clear when they put this session between 8:30 pm-9:30 pm, while the meeting on that day stops at 4:15pm. I mean, who is going to go there, I hope to see ALL the organizers there ! You realize I am getting angry. For I while I was contemplating not doing a poster, because it is useless. Anyway I decided to spent 2 hours today in preparing the plots and the poster and went to the Fermilab media service to get it done. First time I did this, as I mentioned, and I am more happy about it than I thought. It is a bit big (which is due to my inability to have a feeling how much 48 inches are :) ).
The people at media services are awesome. Anyway here is the work of art:
I will tell you more if my grudge was justified or not, when I am back.
