Its great you have the guts to leave your area of expertise and go do something new. Times they are a-changing in physics, and breadth and imagination and flexibility will matter a lot more than irreplacability (I think). Just remember the pain of learning lots of jargon and TLA's (three-letter acronyms) a couple years from now when you're writing your own documentation! :)
