The other day I wrote about competition -- between experiments and also within groups in an experiment. It was prompted by a post by Tommaso on looking for the z->bb peak. After he made that post, I sent it around to a few people I know in DZERO (ok, not that many!) working on multi-jet signals. One of them, my first graduate student, is also working on this Z->bb. He took one look at that post and said, basically, "I'll beat him!". :-) Now we'll see what happens.
Hi Gordon,
you did not waste too much time, huh ? :)
It will be great if D0 comes out with a Z peak
as well. You guys have a better calorimeter, so
in principle your S/N could be better at the peak if you do things right, other things being equal (which I am not giving for granted). Of course, the lack of a dedicated trigger in D0 is a problem.
I would be happy to talk with your colleague about
tools to extract the Z peak. Putting false modesty aside, I think I have quite some experience on this particular topic to share, but I am also still willing to learn more.
