As Gordon once noted, it is dumb to check luggage on a plane if you can avoid doing so - you lose an average 25 minutes to collect it back on the belt, and 0.5% of the times you will not find it, losing more time as you file a lost luggage form.
However, those of us who spend more than a week away from home know that it becomes quickly uncomfortable to travel too light. Moreover, those of us with kids know that no matter how light you travel, you'll be back with a ton in toys.
So it was with resignation that I checked in my trolley in Corfu' yesterday evening. I could not really argue, the 6 kg limit was a half of what my suitcase weighed - and I had another bag with my laptop on a shoulder.
I am optimistic by nature, so after checking the luggage in, I forgot about the risk... My plane from Athens was due to land in Venice at 11PM, and I would have arrived home at midnight only with no checked luggage, half an hour later with luggage to pick up... But the plane was delayed by 30 minutes, and when finally, waiting restlessly for my trolley with an empty belt in front of me, I realized it had not traveled with me, I could not help remembering Gordon's advice to his students...
So I had to file the form and arrived home horribly late. My wife, who hasn't seen me in 12 days, was not overwhelmed by the joy to be waken up to meet me......
But the kids, this morning, where happy as clams to see me!
I feel sorry I will leave again next Monday: to Fermilab again, but just for five days this time - I just could not argue strongly enough with my co-convener Ken against a Jet Energy and Resolution Workshop that is long overdue, and which will be held on Wednesday, the 14th.
Frequent flyer life... Sucks at times!
Hey, I dont feel sorry. What, you havent found those damn particle yet?
